Study Area
Small islands in the territory of our country in general is an ecosystem of its own, separate from the larger islands of the ecosystem, and have limited resources such as land resources, water, forests and minerals. Research on the environment and the characteristics of small islands is needed to obtain a profile of environmental, natural resource inventories, biological diversity and marine habitats. Additional information such as the physical condition of the small island of geographic region, socio-economic and cultural characteristics also need to inventory and studied as an input in the planning area of the small islands.
Geomatics Research Institute conducted a study entitled "Geographical Study Island - a small island, based UNCLOS Natuna Islands." This study aims to assess the ability of remote sensing technology in determining the distribution and number of islands in Natuna regency, based UNCLOS 1982. This can be used as input in the planning and management of potential Natuna area.
Natuna Islands was selected as the research object because it is a cluster of small islands, remote and isolated but has a very large marine resources. These resources are partly taken by the fact that many foreign fishermen passing by in the waters. Also there are some islands that have not been clear, including areas where the administration. This all became an interesting challenge for a research study of the region.
With this study, the position of these small islands follows terinventarisnya islands uninhabited and unnamed per district. Also in this study, a model directory ketch islands under UNCLOS which is expected to also be used for the cluster of other small islands in Indonesia.
